Science
At Harris Academy Clapham we believe strongly in the importance of science and so offer our students a comprehensive and ambitious science curriculum that exposes them to a vast array of content while providing plenty of opportunities to practice new knowledge, applying it to real life situations.
Our curriculum provides the foundations for understanding the world in which we live through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Due to the wide array of content, we believe that students are very likely to come across an area of study that engages them in our subject which we will foster into a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. Through the practice of science experiments, our students are going to be given the skills to investigate and make conclusions of their own in a way that will equip them for adult life, ensuring they are able to make informed decisions about choices they face and tackle the growing problem of “fake news”.
During science lessons, students might be expected to;
-
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas, scientific techniques, and procedures by answering recall questions.
-
Apply knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas through answering questions about the real world of science.
-
Analyse information and ideas to: interpret and evaluate; make judgments and draw conclusions; develop and improve experimental procedures.
-
Use key scientific terminology to answer scientific questions using a range of subject specific vocabulary.
Science is a challenging subject, mostly because it is never ending and requires students to learn a vast quantity of information. However, we at Harris Academy Clapham know that science skills are highly desirable by employers; they demonstrate the ability to problem solve, integrate effectively with others, utilise high numeracy and literacy skills and to assess and evaluate to a high standard. We also strongly believe that an increase in the knowledge and understanding of the world our students will face will provide them with a greater sense of confidence and help them to develop the resilience that can see them develop into successful adults once they have left our school.
