Spanish
Through learning Spanish, students will develop a better understanding of the peoples and cultures from Spanish-speaking countries, which in turn enables them to consider their own identity and place within the world, particularly in the current global and national climate. Language learning is therefore a gateway to the acceptance, pursuit and appreciation of a harmonious international community.
Learning about the language and cultures allows students to become more confident in discussing a wider range of current affairs, comparing global practices with those they experience closer to home. Furthermore, it encourages students to explore how new languages and their language families work, and in the process deepens their understanding of the grammar and linguistics of their mother tongue. Students will be able to gain a deeper understanding of English due to the in-depth study of grammar carried out in Spanish lessons, which shares many grammatical and linguistic traits with English.
The choice of Spanish is one made to equip students with a working knowledge of a language from one of the fastest growing economies in the current age (Latin America), allowing for promising career prospects and progression in later life. The understanding of how and why language shapes thought will allow for more meaningful communication and interaction with Spanish speakers.
We ensure that the beginner stage of learning focuses on grammar and vocabulary of topics that are suitable for young children; this will provide solid basis to more complex language and authentic fluency required in later years. We place emphasis on regular use of authentic materials and historical and contemporary knowledge to ensure that language learning goes beyond the examination and prepares them for real life, as well as celebrating and recognising Spanish/Spanish Speaking Countries’ festivities to the same end.
