Today marks the last day of Anti-Bullying Week, and we’re learning how to recognise when someone might be experiencing bullying. Look out for changes in mood, behaviour, confidence, or friendships and always speak to a trusted adult if you’re worried about someone.

Kindness costs nothing but changes everything. This World Kindness Day, let’s show how powerful kindness can be in person and online.

Today we’re standing up to cyberbullying. Every message, comment, and post matters, so let’s choose kindness, respect, and support online. Together, we can make the internet a safer place for everyone.

At Harris Academy Clapham, we believe that Physical Education is the vessel that carries the responsibility to develop healthy, balanced, and lifelong active students who aspire to develop personal and/or professional ambitions within the sporting world.

We challenge our students to think, perform and articulate like those working in the sports industry. For instance, students develop their leadership qualities through leading drills, warm-ups and discussions held in lessons which are conducted in a safe, inclusive, and fun learning environment.

Within our lessons each student will be given the opportunity to:

  • Improve their fundamental motor skills (FMS) in order to successfully acquire their sport specific skills (SSS).

  • Practice in a wide range of sports throughout the year to find their passion in sport.

  • Stimulate social, emotional and cognitive learning through drills, small sided games and sporting fixtures.

  • Articulate their understanding of a wide range of sports including the teaching points.

  • Show physical, social and affective (feeling) understandings to promote life-long learners.

  • Develop their personal behaviours through showing respect, camaraderie, resilience and good sportsmanship.

Through this structure and core set of expectations, we believe that Physical Education has the unique platform in which students can embed and develop their essential personal traits, such as resilience and teamwork, which can positively influence their future endeavours in the real world.

The Physical Education curriculum is sequenced into episodes of learning that are accessible by drawing on prior knowledge and delivered in small chunks to reduce cognitive overload. This will be visible with teachers delivering content using consistent language to further promote the literacy of our students around Physical Education. The learning objectives are written with the purpose of being achievable for all pupils promoting a sense of inclusivity from a subject that can often be challenging for some. As such, all our students will leave the academy with a deep sense of achievement – ready to excel in the further challenges of life that lie ahead of them, with a wide range of knowledge that they can articulate regarding a breadth of sports enabling them to engage in future encounters with confidence.

Physical Education lessons at Harris Academy Clapham go further beyond a classroom experience and can be linked to the wider life outside of school. Students who relish the challenge of competitive sports have an excellent opportunity to compete against other schools at local and regional level. For instance, our school takes part in regional tournaments (ESFA) and have worked closely with Greenhouse to provide outstanding basketball coaching and enrichment opportunities.

In summary, ‘everything is possible’.
